What we record when you take a test
A company uses By Hand to give you a written test. This page says what we record, who sees it, where it is stored and how long it stays.
What we record
- your name and email address, which the company gives us when it invites you
- when you open your link, when you press Start and when you submit
- your answers
- how you type: each key you press and when, each change you make to the text, and what you select
- what you paste, cut or drag into an answer
- when you leave the test page, and for how long
- the name and version of your browser and computer system, and your keyboard layout
We do not record your screen, your camera, your microphone or your other tabs.
Who sees it
The hiring team at the company that invited you sees your answers and a report on how they were written. The report shows evidence, such as what was pasted, and gives no pass or fail.
The hiring team can make a share link to the report. Anyone with that link can read the report without signing in, until the team stops sharing it.
When you submit, we send your answers to Pangram, an outside service, for a score of how likely the text is to be written by AI. We may use your answers to improve how we detect AI-written text.
Where it is stored
Supabase stores your answers and the recording. Vercel runs this website, and gets your internet address with each page you load. Resend sends the emails, so it has your name and email address.
How long we keep it
Your answers and the recording stay until the hiring team deletes you from its list of candidates. Then your answers, the recording, the report and its share link are gone. Nothing deletes them on its own.
